Career/Employment
- Typically, men have not entered the arena of job stress that women have borne for decades. With increasing parental and home maintenance expectations for American males, stress akin to that suffered by working mothers has invaded the male psyche. Further conflicting is the traditional male role model of self-reliance which deters men from seeking help, unlike women in similar situations. For example, a mother in the workforce is not only aware of flexible scheduling and rights in the workforce, she readily incorporates them into her schedule. Male parents are more inclined to attempt dealing with circumstances rather than be perceived as weak and unable to handle the situation. Added to the mounting responsibilities of parenthood and breadwinner, males are often under the scrutiny of female spouses who may have designated themselves as the evaluator of their spouse’s contributions to the home and parenting.
